Appraisal and Market Value of Lu Yanshao

Lu Yanshao was a Chinese painter born in 1909 in Shanghai. Trained from an early age in calligraphy and poetry under the tutelage of Wu Hufan, he followed in the tradition of Chinese literati before devoting himself fully to landscape painting. His work builds on the tradition of classical Chinese landscape painting while asserting a personal style. He died in 1993 in Shanghai, leaving behind a body of work that is now preserved and exhibited in several major international institutions, such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.  

How can you recognize a work by Lu Yanshao?  

His works are recognizable by their highly expressive brushwork: broad, dynamic, and often very free strokes that structure the landscape without rigidity. He makes extensive use of contrasts between dense ink and more open areas, creating effects of depth and breathing space within the composition. The transitions between forms, mists, and mountains are fluid, almost continuous, conveying a sense of natural movement. His style blends calligraphic mastery with spontaneous energy, resulting in landscapes that are both highly structured and full of life.
