Appraisal and Market Value of Chang Shuhong (1904–1994)  

Chang Shuhong, born in 1904 in Hangzhou and died in 1994 in Beijing, was a Chinese painter known as the “Guardian of Dunhuang.”

After studying art in China, he moved to France in the 1920s, where he trained in academic painting in Lyon and Paris. Upon returning to China, he discovered the Dunhuang (Mogao) Caves and decided to devote his life to them.  

Starting in the 1940s, he spent more than 40 years documenting, copying, and protecting the Buddhist murals, becoming a leading figure in the preservation of Chinese cultural heritage.  

How can you recognize a work by Chang Shuhong?  

His works are recognizable by their style, which blends Western painting techniques with Chinese inspiration. He often uses oil paint with simple compositions and subdued colors. His subjects are frequently related to Dunhuang, portraits, or traditional scenes. The works generally bear a signature in Chinese characters and show a strong influence from ancient murals.
